The ancient Roman philosopher Marcus Tullius Cicero said,
“Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all others.”
I say that thankfulness is not just a great virtue – it is a transformative trait for thriving creators.
Here are 3 powerful ways that a thankful attitude helps creators thrive:
1. It produces positivity & hope
Before I explain how gratitude produces positivity, let’s address why positivity is important for creators.
Why does positivity matter for creators?
As creators, we need to create things that don’t exist yet. How can we do that effectively if we have a negative attitude? A negative attitude makes us think:
- “This can’t be done.”
- “No one has ever done this before.”
- “I’m not talented enough.”
In contrast, positivity makes us think:
- “I think this can be done!”
- “This will be more fun since it’s not been done before!”
- “I have talents and I’ll improve on them!”
How does gratitude produce positivity?
We all have problems and blessings in our life. And we have a choice about how we look at these things. What will we focus on and why does it matter?
What we focus on will be a determining factor in whether or not we have positivity.
Philippians 4:8 says, “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”
If we focus on the good things in our life, we can be grateful… and positive!
2. It increases our resourcefulness
Gratitude causes us to appreciate the talents and resources that we have – rather than focusing on resources that we don’t have.
Being resourceful is saying to ourselves:
“I will find a way to create what I’m envisioning in my mind, somehow, some way, using the things I have.”
It puts the focus on our creativity, instead of our resources. That is, our focus is not on our gear, currently-acquired skills, connections, etc.
And this circles back to positivity. A resourceful creator is not bothered by a lack of resources, which enhances their positivity, which in turn enhances their ability to create!
3. It prepares us to receive direction from the Ultimate Creator
As creators, if we say we are thankful for our abilities, who is it that we are thankful to? These abilities were given to us from our creator:
“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” – James 1:17
When we express gratitude to our creator, we acknowledge him as the source of these “good and perfect gifts”. And when we acknowledge him for these things, it prepares us to receive direction from Him:
“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” – Proverbs 3:5-6
Positivity is imperative for effective creation. Gratitude produces positivity because it focuses us on thinking about the blessings in our life.
Gratitude causes us to appreciate the talents and resources that we have – rather than focusing on resources that we don’t have. This puts the focus on our creativity, not our resources!
Gratitude to our creator is imperative for receiving direction from Him.
